A well known popular eating apple famous for its light green skin and crisp, juicy flesh. Highly versatile, and particularly good for cooking as this variety holds its shape well when cooked.
The Granny Smith apple is one of the most famous green apples in the world, and for good reason! It's a fantastic cooking apple that keeps its shape when baked, making it perfect for delicious tarts and pies. If you enjoy a tart, crisp bite, you'll love eating it fresh as well. Home-grown Granny Smith apples are often much tastier than those from the supermarket, offering a truly delightful experience. Plus, they store incredibly well, which makes them popular both in commercial settings and home gardens.
These apples are easy to recognise with their bright green skins and creamy white flesh. Their dense texture makes them great for both cooking and eating. They’re also ideal for salads because they brown less quickly than other apples. If you like a sharp flavour, you’ll enjoy picking them fresh in November. And with proper storage, you can enjoy them all the way through to April, so there’s no need to worry about having too many!
Granny Smith apple trees are self-fertile and belong to Pollination Group C, often producing heavy crops in mid-autumn. They do best in hot climates and benefit from being left on the tree as long as possible to mature, especially in a warm, extended autumn. However, in the UK, they may not always ripen perfectly due to the cooler climate. Despite this, their excellent storage capabilities and unique tart flavour make them a wonderful addition to any garden. As tip-bearers or partial tip-bearers, Granny Smith trees are also recognised by the RHS as being beneficial for pollinators, adding extra value to your garden's ecosystem.
