Japanese Camellia (Camellia japonica) is a popular evergreen flowering shrub also known as 'Queen of Winter Flowers' due to blooming in early spring when it's still cooler temperatures.

This lovely shrub has deep-green, oval glossy leaves and deep-pink/red rose-like flowers which can be up to 10cm in diameter. The early flowers bring a pop of colour to a slowly emerging garden and act as a food source for any pollinators that may be buzzing about.

Camellia japonica is a shrub that loves shade and will thrive in part and even full shade. Although quite hardy, it likes a sheltered location and  moist, well-drained soils except for chalky.

This fairly fast-growing bushy shrub can grow up to 8-12m with a spread of 4-8m, but it's easily kept smaller. Once established it needs very little maintenance or pruning at all. Any shaping of the plant or trimming of wayward shoots sis always best done done after flowering in spring.
