Fresh Pleached Hornbeam Trees (Carpinus betulus) have deeply veined dark green foliage, with serrated leaf edges, which turns brown in the winter and clings on to the branches. Hornbeam is a native species that is great for difficult positions and poor soil. Hornbeam is a popular variety of pleached tree with good leaf cover in spring/summer and some cover retained over autumn/winter. This particular tree is a root balled product so only available between late autumn and early spring.
The term 'pleached' refers to trees that are trained to form a screen of branches and foliage with a single straight stem. The single stem of this pleached tree is around 2m tall. Planted in rows at set distances, these trees form an elevated 'green wall' that is a great alternative to high fencing. Pleached trees are often used to screen unsightly buildings and can be grown above an existing wall or fence. Used in this way pleached trees can extend the height of a privacy screen to 3 metres or more.
Fresh pleached trees are younger trees with less growth development on the head framework than fully mature versions. Being less mature, they provide a more cost effective option but will still grow into beautiful mature trees with full, thick screens.

Species Information
Hornbeam pleached trees are an exceptionally popular variety of pleached, gracing many formal gardens and urban gardens alike. Similar to Beech but with a deeper veined leaf and a more defined, serrated edge, Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) has vibrant green foliage forming a fairly dense habit that is ideal for providing privacy screening and shade. Even through the autumn and winter months, Hornbeam leaves will turn brown but cover will be retained as some leaves can remain on the branches until new growth pushes through in the spring.n
